Educational Visit – Tower Bridge

Trip date: Monday February 9th

[TechBloq Students – Boys Years 4-6]

Tower Bridge

As part of the boys’ current KS2 STEAM learning on bridges, we’ll be visiting one of the most iconic bridges in the world. This trip will give them a unique inside look at how Tower Bridge was designed, built and operated – bringing their learning to life through a real-world engineering landmark.

Students will explore the bridge from the inside, learn how it works and see the original machinery that powered the famous bridge lifts.

What We Will Do During the Visit

Students and staff will enter Tower Bridge and take part in a self-guided educational visit through the Tower Bridge Exhibition, including:

  • The Towers: exploring the walkways and learning about the bridge’s history, purpose, and design

  • The High-Level Walkways: with panoramic views across London

  • The Glass Floor: a memorable highlight where pupils can look down to the road and river below

  • The Engine Rooms: visiting the original Victorian machinery and learning how the bridge used to be powered and raised, as well as how the lifting mechanism worked historically and how it operates today

This is a rare opportunity for the children to experience London’s most famous bridge as engineers and investigators, not just as visitors.

Educational Links

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about:

  • Engineering & Structures: how bridges are designed to carry loads and remain stable

  • Mechanisms & Movement: how and why Tower Bridge lifts (and the systems behind it)

  • Materials & Design Choices: why particular building materials were used and how design solves real problems

  • Historical Innovation: Victorian engineering and what it tells us about technology and transport at the time

This is an incredible opportunity to take classroom learning beyond the centre and into a world-class setting – encouraging independent thinking, scientific inquiry and a love of learning.
